10 Classic Scary Paintings

There's a nice little article in The Observer today piggybacking on Halloween - as is traditional at this time of year - which presents the rich horror that can be found in fine art through a "10 best..." series. Well worth a look. Here are a couple of my favourites:

Medusa: Caravaggio, 1596-98

Hell: Hans Memling, c1485

  1. Some really good ones in that list. Looking at Blake's "Ghost of a Flea" suddenly made me realize how much there is in common between his and John Blanche's work. There's a mad theatrical creepiness there that's also present in Blanche's "Femme Militant" and other similar works. Always admired both artists, but just now realized that they've both been illustrating visions from the same realm, or at least two very closely adjoining ones. More proof that great art is timeless.

    1. You can really see Blanche's influences shine through his work, so I completely agree with you
